Fast fashion has taken over much of the clothing market. Many modern brands mass-produce trendy clothes hot off the runway at a much lower price. These clothes are often made with inexpensive and unsustainable materials. The price is low, but the methods of production come at a cost. Here’s how you can transform your closet with sustainable clothing brands.

What Is Sustainable Fashion?

The word sustainable is a bit vague and overused these days. Sustainability refers to the balance between the environment, economy and society. Sustainable practices and businesses should meet the needs of the present without compromising the future generations to meet their own needs, too. It presumes that your resources on earth are finite and should be used with care, caution, and conservation.

Sustainable fashion, then, includes clothing and clothing businesses that strive to design, manufacture, distribute, and use them in environmentally friendly and balanced ways. It should continue operating for years to come while still serving each generation.

Although fast fashion seems to be in the spotlight of the fashion industry, many brands are trying to push their way to the scene that promotes sustainable goals and values. Transform your closet with some of these sustainable clothing brands!

1. Patagonia

Patagonia is a well-known brand in the outdoors realm of the fashion industry. They sell durable, rugged and environmentally friendly outdoor clothing and gear. Patagonia has a self-imposed Earth tax, where they give 1% of their profits toward environmental nonprofits working to fight climate change. Besides that, 87% of their line has used recycled materials this year. They grow their cotton organically and participate in fair and ethical trade.

2. Organic Basics

Organic Basics offers clothing essentials for men and women with sustainability in mind. They work only with other companies with similar sustainability values, ensure that their workplace is free of child labor, and provide workers with a safe space with employee perks. Organic Basics’ clothing is made from organic cotton and other recycled materials to benefit the planet.

3. Mate the Label

If you’re searching for sustainable brands based in the United States, then look no further. Mate the Label is mindful of their greenhouse gas emissions through every step of the manufacturing and distribution process. Everything from knitting, sewing, cutting, dyeing, packaging and shipping is accomplished within ten miles of the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles, California. They’re also a 1% For The Planet member, giving 1% of sales to the environment.

4. Tradlands

Tradlands focuses on the durability and repeated wear with their clothing. Sadie Beaudet, the founder of this company, was tired of fast fashion and purchasing clothes repeatedly because they would quickly wear down. Tradlands clothes are for women with durable and sustainable materials. Additionally, each employee is paid a living wage, works in a clean environment and is provided with benefits.

5. Outerknown

Outerknown is one of the best sustainable clothing brands for men. It balances sustainability and focuses on a more laid-back, everyday lifestyle. About 90% of the fabrics used in Outerknown clothing are organic, regenerated or recycled. Additionally, they were the first company to pursue Fair Labor Association accreditation. They also make their swim trunks out of 100% recycled or renewable fibers to help keep the ocean clean.

6. Everlane

Everlane is a popular sustainable fashion brand. They’re committed to being transparent with everything from design to shipment of their products, allowing customers to research everything about them. Everlane’s apparel is made from recycled fibers, too. The brand has a few goals they’re reaching for, including 55% lower carbon emissions per product by 2030, net-zero emissions by 2050, and 46% lower absolute emissions in their stores.

7. Reformation

Finally, the clothing brand Reformation puts sustainability at the center of everything they do. Since 2015, their products have been 100% carbon neutral, and they are working with the nonprofit organization Climate Neutral to make that official. Additionally, the company gets electricity from 100% wind power suppliers, uses LED lighting, recycles 75% of their trash and has local manufacturing.

Wear Sustainability

Getting away from fast fashion will do wonders for the environment. With these brands, it can be possible.
