Plastic and paper products end up in landfills and take years to decompose. When they do they release methane gas which contributes to global warming. 

Also, the plastic can drift into oceans and harm marine life. So use reusable dishware for your family events. During your gatherings, use eco-friendly cooking methods, such as electric or propane grills. 

2.  Buy Second Hand Clothing 

Shopping is a fun summer activity but has an environmental impact. The production of new clothes causes carbon emissions and wastes water. Also, more than 85% of textiles are thrown into the dump annually. 

Shopping at thrift stores or yard sales is one of the more useful green tips for summer. You can find some unique pieces here, and help give them new life. Plus, attending a yard sale is a fun family activity. If you need to declutter, consider having your own yard sale. It’s a great way to clear out your closet and connect with your neighbors. 

3. Find Eco-Friendly Sunscreen 

Sunscreen is important to protect your skin from certain cancers, like melanoma. However, the chemicals can poison coral reefs. Look for lotions with zero waste and non-toxic chemicals. In addition, stay away from products using oxybenzone or octinoxate. Also, remember to wear eco-friendly sunglasses. Look for ones made with sustainable materials, like cork or bamboo. 

4.  Lower Your Air Conditioner 

The summer can get hot, but cranking up your air conditioner can harm the environment. It wastes energy and releases carbon emissions. In addition, it increases your monthly bills. Instead of running your system at maximum capacity, use a fan to cool down rooms. 

You can also use your air humidifier or pull down your shades. These methods consume less energy. You can also try taking a cold shower or closing doors to help beat the heat. 


5. Purchase Food Locally 

Eating homegrown food reduces carbon emissions and supports your local economy. So, consider shopping locally for all your meals and travel snacks. For example, you can shop at a farmer’s market for vegetables and other produce. This way you reduce your carbon footprint and provide your family with a nutritious meal. 

When shopping bring along a reusable bag. This can limit the amount of plastic ending up in landfills. In addition, try to lower your meat consumption. The production of meat causes deforestation, water shortages, and increases in carbon dioxide. 

6. Be Eco-Conscious When Traveling

When on vacation use eco-friendly methods of transportation, such as walking or biking. Cars can emit about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Also, consider taking public transportation when exploring cities. Plus, bring reusable water bottles and containers for your outdoor adventures. Hemp backpacks and bamboo toothbrushes are other sustainable items to carry. 

7. Spend Time off Your Electrical Devices 

Unplugging is an excellent way to save electricity. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to reconnect with your family. Take advantage of the nice weather and ditch your devices for a few hours. Spending time in nature has many health benefits, such as increased physical activity and lowered stress. 

Consider taking a walk, going to the pool, or riding a bike. Before heading out, disconnect your electronics from the wall to prevent energy waste. Your phone uses about two to six watts of energy when charging.

8. Hang Your Clothes to Dry  

Your dryer uses about  1.8 kilowatts and 5 kilowatts watts of energy. So, consider air-drying your clothes instead. This is one of the green tips for summer that saves you money. Buy a drying rack and open your windows to let in the sunlight. Also, run your laundry during the night to prevent your home from overheating. 

9. Plant a Garden

Growing fresh fruit reduces your need to buy processed food. The food supply chain has a large carbon footprint, from production to transportation. Plus, having a garden allows you to cook nutritious meals for your family.
